Blood Sugar Record for Fruit Juice

While 100% fruit juice has a healthy image, what actually happens to blood sugar levels after drinking it? In this article, we measured blood sugar changes after drinking 200ml each of four types of juice: orange juice, apple juice, grape juice, and pineapple juice. We'll present the results with graphs and compare which juices tend to cause rapid increases in blood sugar levels.

    Orange Juice

    I drank 200ml of 100% orange juice.

After drinking orange juice, blood sugar levels rose sharply, reaching a peak (around 160) after about 40 minutes. Afterwards, it gradually decreased and stabilized after 80 minutes.

    Apple Juice

    I drank 200ml of 100% apple juice.

Compared to orange juice, apple juice caused a more gradual rise in blood sugar levels, reaching its peak (around 140) after 50-60 minutes. After that, it gradually decreased. Perhaps due to its high fructose content, apple juice is characterized by its gentle absorption and relatively modest impact on blood sugar levels. This might be recommended for those who want to drink fruit juice while minimizing blood sugar spikes.

    Grape Juice

    I drank 200ml of 100% grape juice.

Among the four types, grape juice showed the most dramatic rise in blood sugar levels, with the highest peak (over 180). Levels rose sharply within 30 minutes of consumption, followed by a rapid decline. This is likely due to the high proportion of glucose contained in grape juice. While it can be effective when you need to quickly raise blood sugar levels, those who need to manage their blood sugar may need to exercise caution.

    Pineapple Juice

    I drank 200ml of 100% pineapple juice.

While pineapple juice showed a relatively gentle initial rise, it had the most dramatic drop after reaching its peak. Blood sugar levels increased within about 30 minutes (peaking around 160), then dropped sharply after 50 minutes, ultimately showing a tendency to fall below pre-consumption levels.
