This time, I visited "Mochizuki-san Cafe", which recreates menu items from the popular Japanese manga "I Love Binge Eating! Mochizuki-san", to try their karaage rice bowl and record/analyze blood glucose changes using CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring).

The Karaage Rice Bowl from "I Love Binge Eating! Mochizuki-san" Manga
"I Love Binge Eating! Mochizuki-san" is a popular manga that follows the daily life of its protagonist Mochizuki-san, who enthusiastically enjoys extreme portions and junk food. In this article, I'll introduce the rice bowl that appears in Chapter 6, which features a generous serving of chicken breast karaage on top of a large portion of brown rice, dressed with reduced-calorie mayonnaise.
Karaage Rice Bowl at Mochizuki-san Cafe
The temporarily operating "Mochizuki-san Cafe" serves dishes that appear in the manga. Here is the image of the karaage rice bowl from the official website.
Here is a photo of the ordered dish. A mayonnaise bottle is provided on the side, which you can add according to your preference. The mayonnaise used to bind the karaage to the rice comes pre-applied, while the mayonnaise on top of the karaage was added by me.
At 1,485 kcal, it's equivalent to about two regular meals in volume, but I was able to eat it comfortably.
Blood Glucose Results
- Blood glucose rise was gradual
- Blood glucose peaked 120 minutes after eating. Peak value was high at approximately 230mg/dL
- Afterwards, levels decreased gradually
Comparison and Analysis
This article (currently in progress) examines changes in blood glucose levels when combining rice with various ingredients. Below are the blood glucose change graphs compared with Mochizuki-san's karaage rice bowl.
From the graph, we can make the following observations:
- The peak blood glucose level was almost the same for both the karaage rice bowl and 150g of white rice alone
- Compared to white rice alone, brown rice by itself and combinations with protein and butter showed a more gradual rise in blood glucose levels and lower peak values
- Although the karaage rice bowl contained a high amount of carbohydrates, it appears that the simultaneous consumption of brown dietary fiber(rice), protein (karaage), and fats (from karaage and mayonnaise) led to a more gradual rise in blood glucose levels and a moderated peak value (though still comparable to 150g of white rice alone)
- To avoid high post-meal blood glucose levels, it seems advisable to avoid excessive carbohydrate intake and maintain a balanced intake of dietary fiber, protein, and fats
Summary
While Mochizuki-san's karaage rice bowl did not show extreme spikes in blood glucose levels, it is high in calories and fat content, so frequent consumption should be limited.
To avoid high post-meal blood glucose levels, it appears advisable to avoid excessive carbohydrate intake and maintain a balanced intake of dietary fiber, protein, and fats.
"I Love Binge Eating! Mochizuki-san" Volume 2 is scheduled for release on April 28, 2025.
